The computer network is taken for granted that it is reliable and does not regular maintenance or upkeep to be properly maintained.  It could be a lack of awareness of the true complexities or cost concerns.  Often times, the risks are underestimated until significant network failures or security breaches occurs.

Proactive: Regularly update network hardware and firmware. Use network monitoring tools to identify and resolve issues before they escalate.

Reactive: Have a troubleshooting guide for common problems and ensure quick access to technical support.

Software updating is critical for many reasons. But most don’t take it seriously enough and can be the underlying solution that can help address such matters security and usability.

Proactive: Schedule regular updates during off-peak hours and use automated update tools.

Reactive: Maintain a rollback plan in case updates cause issues.

The cost of the hardware has decreased to the point of replacing the failed equipment isn’t a cost factor.  Instead, downtime, work stoppage, recovering lost data, and the efforts required to replace are the true cost factors.

Establish a relationship with a Computer Reseller that caters toward commercial and enterprise customers. Perform regular maintenance and replace aging hardware before it fails. Purchase extended warranty after the original expires.

Reactive: Keep spare parts and backup systems ready to minimize downtime. Maintain a list of support phone numbers with contracts. Keep inventory of equipment with serial numbers and purchase dates.
